CHYTRENE
DEXTERS
Trevor
and Irene Pooley
We are situated along the edge
of the River Fal between Truro and Falmouth where we run
about 10 acres with at present 10 Dexters and a small number
of sheep.
It was back in 1992 when
we started looking at several different breeds of cattle but
eventually decided on Dexters due mainly to the size and
what would suit our need on the available acreage.
We were smitten even then with the concept of showing
some of our cattle and we wanted also to breed quality
animals and produce some of this succulent beef we heard so
much about.
Our first two cows were
from the Buryton herd in 1992 and by using AI we have been
able to breed to Ilsington.
Apple. Shilford,
Moomin, Butterbox and Statenboro blood lines.
When we started keeping our cows we joined the
Cornwall Group and coming from a farming family we were able
to share experiences and knowledge with a group of people
who have now become our good friends.
At our first show to
Liskeard in 1996 we were thrilled to receive 3rd prize with
one of our own heifers, Chytrene Isis, and at Launceston
that same year she gained Reserve Champion.
With the excitement of showing still in our blood we
had to wait until 2003 to achieve our first Championship.
We kill 2-3 steers per
year, which kill out at approximately 200kg carcass weight
with 125-130kg of beef to put in the freezer, which we are
able to sell to friends.
We also sell breeding stock, our last heifer which we
sold was purchased by The National Trust for grazing some of
their coastal land not too far from us.
Like so many other Dexter
breeders our aims are to improve the breed by endeavouring
to breed up a herd true to type and to try to increase the
weight of the carcass.
We attend shows to promote the Dexter breed and join
in the friendly camaraderie.
All of our cattle are fed
mainly on grass with some supplementary feeds that do not
contain concentrates.
