Linear Assessment

July 2011

The Dexter Cattle Society announced the launch of the Dexter Cattle Society Linear Classification Scheme at a meeting held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire recently and members were urged to utilise this brand new management tool as part of their farming toolkit by Society Chairman Mrs Jo Kemp. She emphasised the need to move the breed forward and raise the profile of the wonderful Dexter Cattle. “As the numbers of Dexter breeding cattle increases, there is a need to widen our horizons both for breeding cattle and meat production and with ever increasing costs; our economical, hardy animals should become more attractive to a greater number of farmers”

The Dexter Cattle Society are working closely with Holstein UK who will carry out classification as an independent, professional and well respected organisation.   The Linear Classification Scheme will replace the existing in-house bull scheme.

Pedigree Dexter bulls over 2 years of age and in milk females over 2 years of age will be classified to an adapted existing linear format incorporating the Dexter Breed standard. The voluntary scheme application forms and papers are now available to full Dexter Cattle Society members through the Society office at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire.

“As head of classification I am delighted to be classifying  Dexter cattle for the first time in the UK, this is a truly dual purpose breed which will benefit from the services offered by Holstein UK/CDI in the future”   said Michael Parkinson.
