About Us

Objectives of the Society

To advance the education of the public at large by registering, monitoring and exhibiting Dexter Cattle and investigating and encouraging efficient breeding of the Dexter Cattle with a view to improving and increasing the numbers of the breed.

The Dexter breed are descended from the mountain cattle of South West of Ireland and the first herdbook for the breed was founded in 1892.

There are two recognised types – short-legged and non short, they can be black, red or dun coated and be horned or naturally polled.

The cattle are a compact,  thrifty and hardy breed and being dual purpose they produce excellent beef and milk.

Ideal for suckler cow production, conservation grazing and dairy purposes.

The Dexter Cattle Society offers support to owners and breeders of this exceptionally versatile breed with advice, information and a range of services.

Currently 1,460 Society members from all over Europe are registering 4,000+ pedigree cattle each year.
